Our Chicken Coop from Roost & Root

Updated: Aug 24, 2020

Best Chicken Coop for Backyard Chicken Owners

When we first decided to get chickens, we spent hours researching the best coops and runs to keep our girls safe. We ended up going with a Roost and Root coop and an Omlet walk- in chicken run.

For our 6 hens, we went with the this walk-in coop and it is the perfect size for them. It was easy to assemble and has many secure features to keep everyone safe from predators. We also love the fact that we could leave our hens for up to a week with plenty of food and water. Their EZ-fill waterer and feeders are a life saver. It took our hens less than 5 minutes to figure out how to drink from the waterer. We did end up buying a second feeder so we don't need to fill it as often -- our hens eat a TON of their favorite Scratch and Peck Layer Feed.

This specific coop comes with two nesting boxes (although they typically only use the bottom one). We've used fake eggs in their nesting boxes from the very start and have only had one incident where an egg didn't make it into the nesting box. That one egg ended up right below the nesting box on the floor so either the nesting boxes were full and someone really needed to lay an egg or one of our hens were mad at us that day LOL

Our hens love flake pine shavings in their nesting boxes along with dried herbs that they munch on while they are laying an egg. It's always a great day when we open the nesting box to all 6 eggs!

We do a full scrub and coop clean every 10-14 days (with daily light raking). To clean the coop, we first start by raking out all the chicken droppings.

We use a spray bottle filled with half water and half distilled white vinegar and spray this on all the exposed areas and roosts and use a scrub brush to make the process easier.

We also refill our waterer and feeders during this time.

Tip: add a little bit of apple cider vinegar to their waterer to keep their digestive systems working as best as possible.

At the end, we add a new layer of pelletized bedding to the ground to help make the impact of landings easier and sprinkle either DE or First Saturday Lime with Sweet Coop all over. We also spray all the hard to reach areas with Poultry Protector and Insect & Pest Control -- both all-natural solutions to the common problem of mites, lice, fleas and ticks within the backyard flock. They also helps to keep mosquitoes away!

And that's about it! Happy Chickens!!!
